Researching the information necessary for the story adds authenticity to the story, helping the scene come to life. Accuracy is important. I've read stories that came to a jarring halt, for me, when I read something that was inaccurate, implausible or just poor writing. I've nothing against the implausible or impossible, if you've given a good rational for it. Be logical in your explanation. Science fiction, fantasy and writing conventions and festivals often have discussions, panels and workshops about writing given by authors and members of the publishing industry. This a way to get an inside view of what is involved in writing and the publishing industry. None of it as as easy or straight forward as it appears.
